The 4 Steps to Redeem Work test

Welcome to The Bible Money Journal, a brief for Christian professionals who want to learn more about God’s ways of managing money. In each edition, I share a verse, a story, and a money lesson to help you in your journey.

This brief is a resource for navigating the scriptures through the lens of financial planning and learning how to apply them in your life.

Let’s get started!

Genesis 3: 17b-19
17b [...] the ground is cursed because of you.
All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you,
though you will eat of its grains.
19 By the sweat of your brow
will you have food to eat
until you return to the ground
from which you were made.
For you were made from dust,
and to dust, you will return.”

Work is not supposed to be hard

My grandmother had two sayings about work.

When my uncles would complain about having to go to their job every day, she would say, “Work is work. It’s not supposed to be fun; otherwise, it wouldn’t be work.” The meaning of today’s reading goes straight to the heart of that saying: “All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.”

When they came home happy, she would say, “Everybody hates their job until payday.” Was she right? My uncles had the extra pep in their steps and pockets lined with a week of wages to have fun over the weekend. But, unfortunately, Monday wasn’t their favorite.

I don’t think the scriptures entirely agree with this. Sure it is work. It’s not supposed to be EASY, but it can be if you’re using the gifts God gave you and doing what he has called you to.

How to redeem work with a new perspective

So how do we start the process of redeeming work?

👉 We leverage our God-given abilities and put them to work.

Whether in your current position or a different one, we can find deep satisfaction and joy in using the gifts God has given us.

👉 Work leads to cash flow.

As you increase your skills, your market value will rise. But are you currently being paid fairly? Are there opportunities to increase your income potential?

👉 Cash flow, when managed effectively, leads to wealth.

Making money is not enough to build wealth. Managing cash flow effectively requires knowledge and wisdom executed over time, whether you do it yourself or work with me.

👉 Wealthy Christians lead with generosity and focus on legacy.

What happens when you do things well and reach the top of the mountain? Then, it’s time to look at the valley and focus on your legacy. Giving generously and transferring financial resources and values are the final piece of the puzzle to finish your financial journey in good shape.
